Project Details: The existing Ore Bridge; a large gantry crane used to off load taconite pellets from lake freighters, was retro fit with a platform system to access and service the drive and wheel assemblies. The project included two (2) basic platform sections; the first was a mobile catwalk that attached to the existing mobile gantry crane and the second was a fixed platform that allowed access to the gantry mounted catwalk. Access to the crane mounted catwalk was accessible only with the crane in the parked position.
The project brought many challenges to the table; most noteworthy was the mobile catwalk support system. There were only limited drawings available and considerable time was spent to field verify the existing framing and coordinate location of new supports for the catwalk.
